Biography

Susana S. Martins is Senior Researcher at the IHA – Institute for Art History, FCSH, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. With a first degree in Art History, she was awarded a PhD in Photography and Cultural Studies from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), with the work “Portugal as Seen through Foreign Eyes: Photography and Visual Culture in the 1950s”. Martins studies the history and theory of photography, with a particular focus on the intersection of photography, exhibitions and print cultures. Her research covers topics such as travel books, museums & exhibitions, propaganda and national identities. She is interested in the different public spaces of photography and also works on contemporary art, film, and politics. Since 2008, she has taught courses in the fields of photography, visual arts, communication semiotics, visual culture, impressionism and modernity. She is currently coordinator of the IHA Research Group MuSt – Museum Studies.
