Funding Institutions: Instituto de História da Arte, FCSH, Universidade NOVA de
Lisboa; Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian
Starting date: October 2014
Ending date: December 2019
Since its creation in 1956, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has played an active and transformative role in the Portuguese plastic arts. The promotion of young artists and new trends in national and international art and the dissemination of previous periods of Portuguese art were decisive for the updating and dynamization of the Portuguese artistic panorama, as well as for the recovery and study of the architectural and plastic heritage.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s exhibitions have been one of the most impacting aspects of its activity with the public. In fact, they express the policies of promotion of contemporary art and of safeguarding the heritage undertaken by the foundation, and ensure the dissemination of international art, from various geographies and chronologies, in our country. The project History of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Art Exhibitions – online catalogue is a transversal project whose main objectives are the effective international projection of the Foundation’s exhibition memory and participation in the broad international debate that takes place in the area of Exhibitions History, an emerging
discipline in Art History and Museum Studies.
This project begun in 2014 and develops deep research work, based on the inventory, study and dissemination of information from the Gulbenkian Archives, the Gulbenkian Art Library and other related sources. The systematization of the gathered information is ensured by a digital database, briefly placed on online access, which will make available to the scientific community and the general public the history of the Foundation’s exhibit activity and its sources.
For the realization of this project, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation established a scientific partnership with the Institute of History of Art, FCSH, NOVA University of Lisbon, through the Museum Studies research group. The online catalogue establishes cross-references to Master’s Degree and PhD theses and to communications and scientific production whose object of study are the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s exhibitions and collection.
