Para abertura deste ano letivo, no âmbito da 3ª edição da Pós-Graduação em Mercado da Arte e Colecionismo, vamos receber Alain Quemin na conferência inaugural do curso.
What considering record prices and star artists can reveal on the territorial dimension of the art market and institutions
“As Record Prices are always commented per se, little attention is paid to whet they tell about the geography of the art market. Although each price is exceptional, record prices always occur in a very limited number of countries and cities. As far as star artists are concerned and although talent is supposed to be widely spread internationally and nationality is supposed not to matter, especially in an era of so-called “globalization”, we will see that this belief is entirely false and that, there again, a very limited number of countries tend to both concentrate the art market and international institutions and also the most enviable positions for artists. The presentation will question the notion of “globalization” that is too often taken for granted but that can be invalidated when considering empirical data.”
Workshop de especialização (programa):
– Defining contemporary art from a sociological perspective;
– Art fairs in a so-called globalized art world;
– Biennials in a … so called globalized art world;
– A (very) brief summary of the impact of nationality and country of residence on the success of artists;
– Other factors that tend to determine success for visual artists: gender and age;
– A new competition among contemporary art main actors: galleries and private collections: the Paris case.
